Confederate "Butternut" Soldier

Since the Confederacy didn't have as much money as the Union, some Confederate soldiers fought wearing homemade tan colored uniforms made from squashed butternuts. The butternuts were squashed and then used to dye the uniform. The picture above is a good example of what a butternut uniform looked like. Because of this, "butternut" became a popular name for some Confederate soldiers.
